Hello Janou,
You too are privileged to have been part of Jean-Pierre's life. In fact you still are. I wish you great success with your venture. It is wonderful to know there were and are heroes in the world who are not sports stars, actors or politicians; simply people like Jean-Pierre who care.

Blessings,
John

I am Jean-Pierre's step-daughter. He and my mother were married for around 20 years before she passed away in 2000. I worked with him and my mother for many years in their Westwood Pygmy Fund Store, and then when they moved to the 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica CA, and changed the name to African Arts Etc. The website that I now have is in honor to that. I inherited quite a bit of the art that he and my mother collected, and I am working to let more people know about the work that Jean-Pierre did, and to get his collection on tour with museums, and out into the public. I recently had a small museum called Lightning-Welcome that I started with a friend, that had many pieces of the Jean-Pierre, Liane Hallet African Art Estate Collection. Due to the economy we had to close it, but I am working to start an on-line version. He was an amazing man, and I want to continue to honor the work that both he and my mother did. I love African Art and will continue to study it for the rest of my life.

Thank you for writing something so nice about my step-father.

John,
Thank you for posting such a detailed and informative article about Jean-Pierre. He and my mother were friends, probably lovers, sometime between 1975-early 78. I remember him as a very sweet man, and he bought me a subscription to Highlights magazine. He would tell me the story of how he lost his hand and the Pgymy tribe. I was born in 1970 and my mother Susan and I lived in the bay area of California from 1973 to June 1978. Since he is very clear in my memory, I believe he must have been in California during that time. I was shocked to see a documentary film in 1983 in middle school about his life, and none of my classmates believed my claims to know him. I only wish he (or my mother) were alive. She was so beautiful in the 70's as a young woman in her 20's ... but drug use took it's toll and she passed away in March 2000. What a wonderful thing it would have been to interview them both today, just to have one of my cherished childhood memories come to life and "fill in the blanks" for me with this man.
Thank you for sharing this. If you know more about his personal life from that time in the 70's please contact me. I can tell you more about how they must have met, which is very interesting, a little shocking, and not something I want to share on the internet. All the best, Selena
